Ingredients:
1 lb wool
4 oz alum
4 oz black walnut hulls, powdered.
Process:
Boil the wetted wool in the alum for an hour, soak for 24 hours. Rinse.
Add walnut hulls to 4 gal. water, soak for 24 hours. Heat to a boil, boil for 1 hour.
Add the wetted wool, simmer 1 hour. Rinse.
Notes:
Basic medium brown. Not too interesting. But very easy and cheap to do. Next time: do pound-for-pound weight, soak 3 days before dyeing, and soak wool in the walnut for 24 hours after simmering to see how dark it can get. Also, test swatches at 10 minute intervals to see what shades I can get.
